Australia's new Labor government will review around A$30 billion (US$26.3 billion) worth of fighter jet orders, including a controversial deal to buy 24 Boeing Co. (BA) F/A-18 Super Hornets from the U.S., a government spokeswoman said Monday.

"The government has undertaken to conduct a thorough review of the air combat capability options available to Australia," a spokeswoman for Defense Minister Joel Fitzgibbon said.

"The mechanics of this review are...currently being considered and the review will commence as soon as practicably possible," she said. "Without superior air- combat capabilities, the Australian Defense Force's ability to control the air and sea approaches to our nation is compromised."
