Reduced pilot training now approved for the A380
By FlyingNews @ 7:44 AM :: 578 Views :: 0 Comments :: Commercial Aircraft Manufacturers
Reduced A380 transition training for A320 Family, A330 or A340 qualified pilots has been jointly approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). The latest approval was obtained for the transition training from A320 Family aircraft to the A380 on 7th February 2008. This means that, for example, a pilot flying Airbus' smallest aircraft, the A318, can be qualified to fly the A380 in 13 working days. It offers operators significant cost savings since training times can be halved compared to standard type rating courses.

Reduced transition training, known as Airbus Cross Crew Qualification (CCQ), is only possible due to the unique flight operational commonality between Airbus fly-by-wire aircraft. Fifteen Airbus models, from the A318 through to the A380 and including the three new models of the A350 XWB Family, feature very similar flight decks and similar handling characteristics thanks to fly-by-wire technology. Commonality is a fundamental design criterion for Airbus as demonstrated by the fact that CCQ is available now for all combinations of Airbus fly-by-wire aircraft in service.

Airbus foresees demand for some 24,300 aircraft in the next 20 years.
By FlyingNews @ 9:43 PM :: 642 Views :: 0 Comments :: Commercial Aircraft Manufacturers
24,300 new passenger and freighter aircraft valued at US$ 2.8 trillion between now and 2026. This will create an average annual delivery of some 1,215 aircraft, up from the previously forecast 1,130 average deliveries in the last GMF. Demand will drive the need for more fuel and eco-efficient airliners to cope with traffic growth and the need to replace older generation less efficient aircraft. By 2026, the fuel burn of the average world fleet is expected to be at three litres per 100 passenger kilometres, or what the A380 already delivers today.

Airworthiness Directives; Cessna Aircraft Company Models 172R and 172S Airplanes
By FlyingNews @ 7:31 AM :: 617 Views :: 0 Comments :: FAA
SUMMARY: We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Cessna Aircraft Company (Cessna) Models 172R and 172S airplanes. This AD requires you to inspect the fuel return line assembly for chafing; replace the fuel return line assembly if chafing is found; and inspect the clearance between the fuel return line assembly and both the right steering tube assembly and the airplane structure, adjusting as necessary. This AD results from reports of chafed fuel return line assemblies, which were caused by the fuel return line assembly rubbing against the right steering tube assembly during full rudder pedal actuation. We are issuing this AD to detect and correct chafing of the fuel return line assembly, which could result in fuel leaking under the floor and fuel vapors entering the cabin. This condition could lead to fire under the floor or in the cabin area.

Lt. Col. James “Flipper” Kromberg of the U.S. Air Force became the first military service pilot to evaluate the F-35 Lightning II, taking the aircraft through a series of maneuvers Wednesday on its 26th flight.

Kromberg took off from Lockheed Martin's [NYSE: LMT] Fort Worth plant at 11:54 a.m. CST, flew the plane to 6,000 feet and checked handling qualities at 15-degrees angle of attack. He then climbed to 10,000 and 12,000 feet assessing the up-and-away flight-control response. Kromberg also tested the F-35's engine performance and formation-flying characteristics.

"The aircraft flew very well, exceeding my expectations," Kromberg said. "I was surprised by the amount of power on the takeoff roll. And the handling, particularly with the gear up, was phenomenal. The aircraft was very stable flying in formation with another airplane. It was really a joy to fly."

A380 flies on alternative fuel
By FlyingNews @ 8:22 AM :: 337 Views :: 0 Comments :: Commercial Aircraft Manufacturers
Test aircraft A380 MSN004 has flown between Filton and Toulouse with one engine powered by alternative fuel. The test, part of Airbus? research programme into alternative fuels, was run in collaboration with Shell International Petroleum and Rolls Royce.

The project is particularly important for environmental and economical reasons. Crude oil derived products are increasingly in demand and prices are rocketing. If it is possible to find a suitable alternative fuel, this could stabilise the market for the benefit of all. Secondly, some alternative fuels could be beneficial for the environment. It is Airbus? goal as a key stakeholder to support evolution towards a carbon neutral aviation industry. Alternative fuels may contribute to reducing our carbon footprint.
