A fuel leak through that hole likely caused Monday's fire on the China Airlines Boeing 737-800, said Kazushige Daiki, chief investigator at Japan's Aircraft and Railway Accidents Investigation Commission.

SUPPLIER WOES FORCE COLUMBIA FURLOUGH
By FlyingNews @ 3:26 PM :: 615 Views ::

|
Major avionics supplier Garmin recently notified Columbia Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation of an inherent problem in the AHRS (Attitude, Heading & Reference System) of its G1000 integrated avionics system that will delay shipments of the Primary Flight Display used in the Columbia 350 and 400. The problem limits aircraft operations to VFR only and causes an inability for Columbia to issue a Certificate of Airworthiness to customer specifications for delivery.
The resultant supply chain stoppage and business interruption is forcing Columbia Aircraft Manufacturing to furlough a portion of its direct workforce as the production line grinds to a halt until the issue is resolved and parts shipments commence. Customer Care, Factory Service Center, Sales, Marketing, and Engineering will continue to provide the same level of support during the interim period until parts shipments enable production to begin.

Lieutenant-Colonel Terry Wood of the C-17 Project Management Office at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa traveled to Long Beach, California last week to sign the official document stating Canada is satisfied and ready to accept its first C-17 Globemaster III. LCol Wood signed the document on Friday, August 3 at the Boeing plant. LCol Wood sends along these comments on why signing the "DD250" document is truly a "signature" moment for Canada.
"What I just signed is the United States Department of Defense form DD250, which is used for material inspection and receiving. As the Technical Authority for the Canadian C-17 contract with Boeing, I put my signature on this form signifying that Canada accepts that the completed aircraft meets its performance specification and all quality standards. This signature will trigger final payment for the aircraft - in essence, we've just bought our first C-17.

Airworthiness Directives; Teledyne Continental Motors Reciprocating (TCM) Engine Models IO-550-N, TSIO-520-BE, TSIO-550-A, TSIO-550-B, TSIO-550-C, TSIO-550-E, and TSIO-550-G
AGENCY: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Transportation (DOT).
ACTION: Final rule; request for comments.
SUMMARY: The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for TCM IO-550-N, TSIO-520-BE, TSIO-550-A, TSIO-550-B, TSIO-550-C, TSIO-550-E, and TSIO-550-G reciprocating engines. This AD requires removing before further flight, certain Kelly Aerospace Power Systems turbochargers, part number (P/N) 466304-0003, listed by serial number in this AD. This AD results from four incidents of the turbine rotor separating from the shaft of the turbocharger. We are issuing this AD to prevent the turbine rotor from separating from the shaft of the turbocharger due to a machining defect in the turbocharger compressor. This condition could result in full engine power loss, loss of engine lubricant, or smoke in the airplane cabin.
DATES: This AD becomes effective August 23, 2007. The Director of the Federal Register approved the incorporation by reference of certain publications listed in the regulations as of August 23, 2007.
We must receive any comments on this AD by October 9, 2007.

The sound of freedom is once more, as 109 P-51 Mustang fighter planes will roar overhead during The Gathering of Mustangs & Legends--The Final Roundup, Sept. 27-30, at Rickenbacker International Airport (LCK), in Columbus, Ohio. LCK, originally Lockbourne Army Air Base, became home to the Tuskegee Airmen after World War II. LCK's namesake, Eddie Rickenbacker, was the leading American fighter pilot of World War I.
Attendees will be permitted to photograph aircraft, but perhaps the rarest treat of all will be the opportunity to meet nearly 50 of the aces, heroes and legends who flew the P-51 Mustang. To name a few, Gen. Chuck Yeager, Lt. Col. Lee Archer and Maj. Gen. Donald Strait will be mingling with P-51 aircraft with names such as "Moonbeam McSwine," "Big Beautiful Doll" and the "Flying Dutchman." During the four-day Mustang event, other WWII fighters and bombers along with top civilian air show performers will attend. On Sept. 29-30, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will take to the sky performing precision aerial maneuvers and exhibiting the capabilities of modern high-performance aircraft.

Mass Pilot Exodus, Low Morale Cause Concern for Mesa Pilot Leadership

Mesa Air Group [NASDAQ: MESA] pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, put up billboards across the country this week calling on the carriers to address pilot staffing and morale issues that are reaching critical levels and negatively impacting Mesa operations. Mesa Air Group pilots fly as Delta Connection, US Airways Express, United Express, Go Airlines and Mesa Airlines.
Mesa management’s unwillingness to follow the pilots’ contract has caused a mass exodus of skilled pilots making unprecedented lateral moves to other regional carriers. So far this year, nearly 400 pilots have left Mesa Air Group, creating pilot shortages which, among other things have led to flight delays and cancellations.

Poor on-time performance plagues Alaska and the industry
By FlyingNews @ 2:49 PM :: 220 Views ::

|
[Editor] This is an interesting article, because it is on the Alaska Airline's website. They actually admit and talk about their on time performance problems.
As the sun dawns each day over the Alaska Airlines system, about 85 of the carrier's gleaming jets in Anchorage, Seattle, Los Angeles and elsewhere are destined for a STAR.
"Start The Airline Right" flights are a critical component in meeting Alaska's on-time goal of 80 percent, which is based on Department of Transportation (DOT) records of domestic flights that arrive at their planned destination within 15 minutes of the published time.
Thanks to improved maintenance scheduling, which spreads the overnight workload more evenly among aircraft technicians at the airline's stations, the number of jets out of service for the system-wide STAR launch has fallen from an average of six to three since January. In Seattle, that number has dropped from an average of 4½ jets to about one.
Maintenance & Engineering also works to ensure that logbooks are onboard aircraft an hour before their STAR departure and a technician is available to talk with the flight crew 30 minutes beforehand — elements of a new program called "Meet & Greet."

Flying in Russia an increasingly deadly affair

The August crash last year of Pulkovo Airlines Flight 612 from the Black Sea resort of Anapa to St. Petersburg was officially attributed to pilot error. Safety advocates, however, see it as symptomatic of much deeper problems in Russian aviation: a growing fleet of small, low-budget airlines; under-trained pilots; weak government regulation; and a cost-cutting mentality that sometimes causes pilots who abort flights and landings to be fined.
Russia and the other former Soviet republics had the worst air traffic safety record in the world last year, with an accident rate 13 times the world average, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Air racing is a high-flying, sometimes dangerous pastime that makes auto racing, even air stunt shows, seem old-fashioned.
London staged its first race Sunday right over the Thames to a crowd of 35,000 spectators. That was just one stop in a world series sponsored by Red Bull that pits pilot against pilot in aerial slalom races, from Rio to Abu Dhabi to Monument Valley in Arizona.

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) applauds Congress for passing H.R. 1, the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007. The measure includes an ALPA-backed provision which requires the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to establish a process that would give flight deck and cabin crew members expedited airport access through screening check points.
“This bill, upon the President’s signature, starts a 180-day clock for the TSA to consult with airlines, airports, and flight crew unions on how to improve airport access,” said ALPA President Capt. John Prater. “ALPA has prepared for this opportunity. We have a proposal that provides a low-cost and effective process to leverage existing technology to screen crew members, saving TSA time and money.”
