ATA Reacts to Department of Transportation LaGuardia Slot Withdrawal and Auction "Experiment"
By FlyingNews @ 7:15 AM :: 82 Views :: 0 Comments :: Commercial Airlines, Airports, FAA
The Air Transport Association of America (ATA), the industry trade organization representing the leading U.S. airlines, today issued the following statement in response to Department of Transportation (DOT) plans to withdraw LaGuardia slots and auction those slots back to the airlines:

“It is truly mystifying, with the airline industry in a financial meltdown due to overwhelming fuel prices, that DOT decides now is the time for a costly economics experiment at LaGuardia. It is even more ridiculous considering the DOT’s highly suspect claim of legal authority it has just ‘discovered’ after decades of concluding the opposite,” said ATA President and CEO James C. May.

FAA to Install Runway Safety Warning System at LAX
By FlyingNews @ 7:34 AM :: 111 Views :: 0 Comments :: Airports, FAA
Technology that warns pilots about potential runway safety hazards will be installed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) under a partnership between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the City of Los Angeles.

The system, called Runway Status Lights, uses a series of red lights embedded in the pavement to warn pilots if it is unsafe to cross over or enter a runway. Under an agreement between the FAA and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), pilots will begin testing Runway Status Lights at LAX — the nation’s fourth busiest airport — early next year. LAWA is funding the system, which costs an estimated $6 million. The FAA will install, test, evaluate and maintain the system.

New National Policy to Make It Easier for Airports to Add Capacity and Reduce Congestion
By FlyingNews @ 8:20 PM :: 97 Views :: 0 Comments :: Airports
U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters today announced a new national policy that would make it easier for overcrowded airports to add capacity and reduce delays by encouraging airlines to spread their flights more evenly throughout the day.

“Airports will now be able to more efficiently and effectively finance the kind of projects that will give travelers more options, airlines more opportunities, and cities like New York more visitors,” Secretary Peters said.

Once finalized, the U.S. Department of Transportation would encourage congested airports in New York and across the country to move away from the decades-old practice of charging aircraft landing fees based simply on the weight of the plane, Secretary Peters said. Instead, airports would have the flexibility to vary charges based on the time of day and the volume of traffic.

General aviation to get choice at airport
By FlyingNews @ 10:46 AM :: 144 Views :: 0 Comments :: General Aviation, Airports
As soon as six months from now, Blue Grass Airport might have a second business offering fuel, maintenance and storage space for planes.

Air 51 LLC will become the second fixed-base operator at the airport, which is now served solely by TAC-AIR.

The airport's board voted yesterday to allow Air 51 to occupy just over 2 acres in the southeast quadrant of the airport property.

The company plans to spend $2 million on construction, including a fuel farm and a 12,000-square-foot hangar for aircraft maintenance and storage.

The hangar will include a conference room, flight planning area, sleep rooms, showers and a pilot's lounge.
