Composite Aircraft Wing research gets underway at GKN Aerospace

GKN Aerospace teams at the Company’s Composites Research Centre, Cowes, UK and at the Ice Protection Facility in Luton, UK, have commenced work on the three year ‘Next Generation Composite Wing’ (NGCW) research programme aimed at revolutionizing technologies that will improve future wing design and manufacturing processes in the UK.

NGCW is an Airbus, UK-led collaboration between 17 leading British organisations, both industrial companies and research organisations, and is jointly funded by the UK Technology Strategy Board (TSB), a number of Regional Development Agencies (RDA’s) and the industrial partner companies.

Aerospace Employment Climbs Steadily

Aerospace employment increased in March to 651,700, a slight increase over the 2007 year-end average of 645,600.

"This is good news for aerospace manufacturers and for workers looking for good jobs because the opportunities will continue," said AIA President and CEO Marion Blakey. "While overall manufacturing employment has declined, our civil, defense and space sectors are strong with a record backlog of orders fueled by major export growth."

450 jobs to go at BAE in Brough

Both house part of the company's Military Air Solutions business which employs around 10,500 people on five key military aircraft programmes, including the Typhoon, Nimrod, Hawk, the Joint Strike Fighter.

Officials expressed shock at the scale of the cuts. Union Unite said it would resist compulsory redundancies among the 450 job losses at Brough, home of the Hawk aircraft, and 134 job cuts at Woodford, the home of Nimrod.

NRL Developing Space "Tow Truck" Technology For Satellite Operations

The Naval Research Laboratory's Naval Center for Space Technology has achieved a key milestone toward the development of autonomous servicing of unaided spacecraft. Working with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), NRL has developed, tested and ground-demonstrated guidance and control algorithms to allow a robotic servicing vehicle to autonomously rendezvous and dock with customer satellites not pre-designed for docking.

Northrop Grumman Completes Acquisition of Scaled Composites, LLC

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) announced today that it has completed a transaction that increases its ownership in Scaled Composites, LLC from approximately 40 percent to 100 percent.

Scaled Composites is an aerospace and specialty composites development company located in Mojave, Calif., with broad experience in vehicle design, tooling, and manufacturing; specialty composite structure design, analysis and fabrication; and developmental flight test.

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne Main Engines Add New Measure of Safety to Space Station-Bound Shuttle

Three Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne Space Shuttle Main Engines, fitted with upgraded controllers to actively monitor engine health and performance, powered the launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center today. The Endeavour is on Mission STS-118 to the International Space Station (ISS). Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne (PWR) is a United Technologies Corp. [NYSE:UTX] company and has powered the Space Shuttle since its first mission in 1981.

This successful launch comes just days after NASA awarded Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne a nearly $1 billion contract extension to continue maintaining the agency’s fleet of Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSMEs).

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne Awarded $1.2 Billion NASA Contract for J-2X Ares Rocket Engin

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne (PWR), a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company, was awarded a NASA contract valued at $1.2 billion to design, develop and test a J-2X engine that will power the upper stages of the Ares I and Ares V launch vehicles.

IAI's OFEK 7 Satellite was Launched into Space

Boeing Orbital Express Completes First Autonomous Free Flight and Capture

The Boeing [NYSE: BA] Orbital Express system has completed another industry first by successfully performing a fully autonomous free-flight rendezvous and capture operation. The demonstration of the two-spacecraft system is part of an ongoing Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) mission to validate on-orbit servicing capabilities.

Using its onboard cameras and advanced video guidance system, the Boeing Autonomous Space Transport Robotic Operations (ASTRO) servicing spacecraft separated from the NextSat client spacecraft, backed away to a distance of 10 meters (33 feet), maintained proximity flight with NextSat for a full orbit, and then approached and captured NextSat with its docking mechanism.

The demonstration occurred at full spacecraft autonomy to mark the first on-orbit rendezvous and capture operation performed with no active exchange of relative navigation information or any intervention or control from the ground.

GE Aviation Completes Acquisition of Smiths Aerospace

GE Aviation announced today that it has completed the acquisition of Smiths Aerospace, a U.K.-based supplier of integrated systems for aircraft manufacturers and components for engine builders. The purchase price was $4.8 billion.

The acquisition broadens GE's offerings for aviation customers by adding Smiths innovative flight management systems, electrical power management, mechanical actuation systems and airborne platform computing systems to GE Aviation's growing commercial and military aircraft engines and services. The combined GE Aviation and Smiths Aerospace revenues in 2006 were $15.6 billion (USD).
