Lycoming Announces IO-390 Engine

At EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2008, Lycoming announced the expected FAA certification of the IO-390-A1A6 by November 2008. Upon certification of this initial version, the IO-390 Series will become a permanent member of the Lycoming certified engine family.

Lycoming developed the certified IO-390 in response to airframe manufacturers and aircraft owners who have requested a higher horsepower, four-cylinder version of Lycoming's successful IO-360, 200hp engine models. For several years, the uncertified version of a 390 Lycoming engine, the IO-390-X, has been powering many homebuilt and kit aircraft in the experimental market.

Delta TechOps Signs Engine Maintenance Agreement with Alaska Airlines

Delta Air Lines’ (NYSE: DAL) maintenance division – Delta TechOps – has inked a seven-year contract with Alaska Airlines to provide exclusive engine overhaul and repair services for the CFM56-7 engines that power Alaska’s fleet of Boeing 737-700 and 737-900 aircraft. The deal, worth more than $200 million, leverages Delta’s unique partnership with Chromalloy Gas Turbine Corporation to provide Alaska with a comprehensive engine maintenance solution with industry leading quality and economics.

Lycoming Engines Launches the Thunderbolt Signature Series TIO-360-EXP

Lycoming Engines, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, today launched the TIO-360-EXP Thunderbolt engine. The Signature TIO-360-EXP is a non-certified turbo-normalized intercooled fuel injected gasoline engine that is nominally rated at 180HP from sea level to greater than 20,000 feet altitude.

The engine is approved for use on ASTM D910 100LL and Lycoming approved aviation grade 91/96UL unleaded fuels specified in Service Instruction 1070 without performance restriction. Future approval for use of EN228 and ASTM D4814 automotive based fuels with supplemental Lycoming specifications for safe operation in aviation applications is planned upon completion of further evaluation.

Full Head of Steam for Engine Production at THIELERT

The insolvent Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH (THIELERT) has resumed full production of aircraft engines. With immediate effect, the company can once again supply the THIELERT Centurion 2.0 engine in large quantities.

Production at THIELERT initially came to a halt in April 2008 for a short period after the company was forced to petition for insolvency proceedings at the end of the same month. The company’s provisional insolvency administrator – Bruno M. Kübler – then focused his efforts on getting the company’s production back on track. After spare parts production and supply was secured already three weeks ago, the company is now able to fully participate on the market again with its engine production.

First F414-powered E/A18G Growler delivered to Navy fleet

The first fleet Boeing EA-18G Growler airborne electronic aircraft powered by F414 engines was delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) today at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WA. Approximately 180 propulsion systems to power 90 E/A-18G aircraft are expected to be delivered through 2013.

"We are extremely proud to support the Hornet Industry Team and the United States Navy in their ongoing efforts to strengthen and expand the capabilities of the F/A-18 family of aircraft," said Tony Mathis, vice president -- Lynn Turbofan/Turbojet Projects Department.

Lycoming Engines Announces IO/O-360 Automotive Gas Approval Program

Recognizing global concerns about the immediate and long-term availability of aviation grade 100LL fuel, Lycoming Engines, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, today announced an unleaded automotive gasoline approval program for its standard compression ratio O-360 and IO-360 product lines.

Unleaded 93 AKI automotive gasoline conforming to either Euro Norm EN228 or ASTM D4814 will be the basis of this Lycoming specified fuel. Supplemental requirements within the scope of the existing standards will be stated as necessary for safe operation in aviation applications.

Fighter engine fuel test ends, prepares for first flight

The first fighter jet engine completed alternative synthetic fuel testing at the U.S. Air Force's Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC), Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., in May.

The fuel was tested on a Pratt & Whitney F100 engine, the powerplant for the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon in a simulated altitude jet engine test cell.

The F100 engine went through the same-type testing the F101 underwent at AEDC last fall. The F101 is the powerplant for the B-1 Lancer bomber. Tests included operability, augmentor and performance testing.

Pratt & Whitney F135 Team Receives STOVL Flight Qualification

Pratt & Whitney received a statement of qualification for the F135 short-takeoff/vertical-landing (STOVL) propulsion system from the F-35 Joint Program Office. This statement certifies Pratt & Whitney’s F135-PW-600 STOVL propulsion system for up-and-away flight operations. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company.

“This certification letter is a step on the critical path to flying the aircraft and brings us closer to powering the first flight of the F-35 Lightning II STOVL variant this spring,” said Bill Gostic, Pratt & Whitney vice president, F135 engine programs.

Pratt & Whitney Canada and Helicopters of Russia Sign MOU to Produce PW127TS for Russian MI-38 Helicopter

Pratt & Whitney Canada and Helicopters of Russia have signed today in Moscow a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to produce the PW127TS engine for Russia’s new generation, twin-engine medium helicopter MI-38. Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) is a United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) company.

Under the agreement with JSC "Helicopters of Russia", JSC "Ufa Engine Industrial Association" (UMPO) and the Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM), P&WC will be responsible for developing a turboshaft version of its PW127 engine and having it certified to Transport Canada and Russian standards.
