Afghanistan war: Why helicopters are critical to US and NATO forces

In one of the worst chapters of their casualty-marred deployment in Afghanistan, Canadian forces earlier this year lost 10 soldiers in 90 days to improvised bombs on one stretch of highway in Kandahar province.

Then a US Army helicopter crew stalking Taliban insurgents who plant bombs at night spotted a five-man team, watched the insurgents through sophisticated optical gear until it was certain that's what the men were doing and got permission to kill them.

Price rise may be only option to save Airbus A400M

A higher sticker price and fewer guaranteed deliveries may be the only way to rescue Europe's new military transport plane after years of costly delays.

The Airbus A400M is being prepared for a December maiden flight in southern Spain even as its fate depends on the outcome of talks to save the 20-billion-euro project from collapse.

Royal Saudi Air Force Orders Additional GE F110 Engines for F-15S Aircraft

The Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) has ordered 91 F110-GE-129C engines to re-engine 41 twin-engine Boeing F-15S aircraft. This order follows the 2007 Royal Saudi selection of 65 F110 engines to re-engine 29 F-15S aircraft.

The combined value of the two Royal Saudi orders--156 F110 engines and the logistics support package--exceeds $750 million, with engine deliveries beginning later this year.

Vought to Provide Wings for U.S. Navy Maritime Surveillance Aircraft

Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc. said today that it will supply the wings for Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NYSE: NOC) platform aircraft for the U.S. Navy’s new Broad Area Maritime Surveillance Unmanned Aircraft System (BAMS UAS) program.

“We are honored to be a part of a vital aircraft program that supports and protects our nation,” said Dennis Orzel, vice president, Vought Integrated Aerosystems Division. There are about 70 people in Dallas and 20 in Milledgeville, Ga., who work on Vought’s Global Hawk program.

Boeing Awarded $28.8 Million E-6B Upgrade Contract

The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] has been awarded a $28.8 million sole-source U.S. Navy contract to upgrade the service's fleet of 16 E-6B airborne command, control and communications aircraft.

In support of ongoing E6-B spiral development activities, the first phase of the Internet Protocol Bandwidth Expansion program will use commercial-off-the-shelf technology to increase the aircraft's wideband communications capabilities, allowing for real-time data transmission on the jet. Work on the first aircraft will be completed in 2010.

U.S. Government Releases $1 Billion in Funding for Production of Six Lockheed Martin F-35B STOVL Aircraft

The U.S. Department of Defense has released $1 billion of funding to acquire six Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft as part of the second Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) contract for the F-35.

The LRIP 2 contract, worth $2.2 billion for a total of 12 aircraft, was awarded in May. At that time the government authorized six conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) F-35As, with release of $933 million, and gave provisional approval for the STOVL jets pending certain requirements. Those stipulations were met by the first flight of the initial F-35B test aircraft on June 11 and by completion of a propulsion system review on July 22. The government exercised the option for the STOVL aircraft and released the $1 billion on July 22.

Boeing, Qatar Announce C-17 Globemaster III Order

Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the government of Qatar signed an agreement on July 21 for the purchase of the C-17 Globemaster III airlifter to provide new strategic-airlift mobility capabilities for the Qatar Armed Forces (QAF). Qatar will sign a Foreign Military Sales agreement for contractor logistics support with the U.S. Air Force.

Boeing will begin deliveries from its Long Beach, Calif., C-17 factory, in summer 2009.

Boeing Installs Engines on 1st P-8A Poseidon

Boeing [NYSE: BA] installed two CFM56-7B engines on the U.S. Navy's first P-8A Poseidon June 21 in Renton, Wash. The on-schedule assembly closely follows the aircraft's wing-to-body join and "power on" milestones.

Following final functional checks, the Boeing-led Poseidon industry team will conduct initial engine runs. Boeing will deliver the first test aircraft to the Navy in 2009.

A royal celebration for A400M military airlifter's rollout

The first Airbus A400M military transporter rolled out from its final assembly line in Seville, Spain today, marking a key milestone in the development for this new multi-role airlifter.

In a ceremony presided by His Majesty Juan Carlos I, King of Spain, the aircraft was presented to an international audience of 1,500 invited guests, which included hundreds of Airbus employees wearing commemorative white T-shirts, military officials from participating countries and journalists. The unveiling was highlighted by a colourful fanfare of traditional Spanish music, dance and aerial gymnastics.

63 years later, 404 Squadron returns to ‘Black Friday’ site

Representatives from 404 Maritime Patrol and Training (MP&T) Squadron from 14 Wing Greenwood, N.S. will leave Canada for Forde, Norway on June 23 to pay final respects to aviators lost during the tragic ‘Black Friday’ mission of February 9, 1945.

On that cold day, 404 Squadron, also known as the ‘Buffalo’ Squadron, sent 11 Bristol Beaufighter TFX twin-engine coastal fighter aircraft to attack one of the last surviving German destroyers near Forde on the western coast of Norway.
